Wine Road

The Romans were the first to plant grapevines on the gentle hills of Međimurje. Today, the landscape of Upper Međimurje is dotted with over a thousand hectares of vineyards, yet it has managed to preserve exceptional biodiversity.

The offer along the Međimurje Wine Road includes around thirty beautifully arranged wine cellars and tasting rooms. In them, visitors can taste and buy exquisite white wines (Pušipel, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Traminac, Yellow Muscat, Graševina, Rhine Riesling, White and Gray Pinot, Green Silvaner…) as well as some red and rosé wines (Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon…). The range of wines extends from excellent house blends, through varietal wines, to premium predicate wines – selected harvests or ice wines.

An integral part of the wine road are also restaurants offering traditional specialties, scenic viewpoints, cycling trails, and walking paths. Throughout the year, various wine festivals and celebrations take place along the Wine Road: January – Vincekovo, May – Urbanovo, September – Rokovo, and November – Martinje. All roads and facilities are marked with “brown” tourist signs, making them easy to find.

Individual visits to cellars and tasting rooms must be arranged by phone in advance. The quality of the wines and accompanying services place this wine road among the very best in Croatia’s enological offerings, and in 2007 it was declared the best tourist product of continental Croatia.

Urbanovo

A major event in our region is Urbanovo – an international traditional festival that has been held in this form since the year 2000. Saint Urban, the patron saint of vineyards and one of the Roman Popes, is said to have saved vine growers from hail. Every year at the end of May, a folk celebration is dedicated to him – Urbanovo.

Pušipel

An indigenous grape variety produced exclusively in Međimurje – Pušipel – originates from the Moslavac variety and has become a recognized brand of high quality. In our wine-growing region, it is also known as Šipon, with two product lines distinguished under the Pušipel brand: Classic – wines from regular harvests, and Prestige – predicate wines. The differences within the brand guarantee continuous improvement in quality, along with advancements in vineyard and cellar production technologies. The native Međimurje Pušipel will win you over with its color, aroma, and taste.
